DeSean and Company...Too Much for NY's Depleted Secondary.
The day started so well for the Philadelphia sports fans. The Eagles blitzed out of the gate, took advantage of some Giant turnovers, and basically blew the Giants away. A two-touchdown flurry right before the half sealed the deal, and sent the Eagles past the Giants in the NFC East race. Hard to believe this is the same team that got man-handled in Oakland, but if there is a signature to the Andy Reid Eagles, it’s that you never know what you are going to get. For their part, the Giants looked listless. This isn’t the same team that started 5-0, and it doesn’t look like the same Eli, either. Terrible game for Eli, who had been dominating Don in the season stat categories, but was clearly out-played on Sunday. Does Eli have a confidence problem? I know DeSean Jackson doesn’t. This guy creates explosions, and the Eagles were back to their quick-strike ways.
Elsewhere around the league, we are faced with the ever crystallizing realization that Brett Favre and the Vikings may be for real. Green Bay isn’t a bad team, and they rolled right in there, and even though they let the Packers take a peek…they came out on top. Favre, for lack of a better description, looks really good. And, he’s got some help. We’re only halfway through a season of Favre-perbole. Brace yourself. Not much popped on the rest of the schedule. Baltimore handed Denver its first loss. It was a bad spot for Denver. I actually called that in my picks, but it was pretty clear. Eventually this team was going to lose, and this happened to be the spot. We’ll see how they bounce back. Other firsts out there as well, as Tennessee and St. Louis picked up their first wins of the season. It does put into perspective Detroit’s excellence. Balls in your court, Tampa.
You know, of course we can’t wrap up a NFL slate without handing out the worst QB performance of the week award. I took a look at Eli. I’ll be honest. That was putrid. I took a look at Ryan Fitzpatrick. Nice 40.2 QB rating there fella. But, the fact of the matter is, Derek Anderson is one of the founding fathers of this award. If he performs, you can’t beat him. Not only that, I’m afraid the Mangini might switch back to Quinn again. So, it could be a farewell to Derek Anderson, but he goes out with a bang. 6/17, for 76 yards, and 2 picks. QB rating? 10.5. Can someone explain this guy’s 2007 season to me?
NFL games wrap up Monday with an important NFC match-up. The Saints try to stay unbeaten, and the Falcons try to stay in the wild-card picture. Big showcase game for New Orleans. Should be a good time.
I fought BK for a while on his remarks re: the secondary but I am now a believer. I never thought CC Brown was good, but good God. I’d be curious to see what kind of success would ensue if Coughlin put a second or third string receiver out there as corners against the #2 or #3 guy. Maybe Moss when Manningham gets back.
I think the game began with NY making the Eagles look really good, but I’ll hand it to the Eagles for capitalizing on that and having a good game.
Did anyone else think the reversal of Fat Freddy Robbins lateral to Osi was a horrible call?
I think the call was correct based on the way the rule is written. Osi definitely caught the ball beyond the point where the Fat Guy 1 released it. It was like a full yard or two forward.
The problem is that the rule doesn’t account for basic principles of physics. As Fat Guy 1 runs forward at X speed, the ball is travelling at the same speed. When Fat Guy 1 laterals the ball to Fat Guy 2, the ball leaves Fat Guy 1’s hands at some speed X – Z (Z being the speed at which he actually laterals the football backwards). So, unless Z > X, meaning he laterals the ball faster than the speed at which he is running, the ball will ALWAYS be travelling forward while it is in the air. It seems unlikely, even given how slow Fat Guy 1 is running, that he would fire the lateral backwards fast enough to overcome his already forward momentum. More often than not, its a slow lateral pass that always ends up being caught beyond the point of release due to the speed of the lateral pass is not enough to overcome the speed of Fat Guy 1.
Can you tell i miss math/engineering a little?
Im sure Q will be all over this comment.
You’re right. I’m sure the refs were talking physics during deliberations.
Fred Robbins releases at the 38. Osi Umenyora receives lateral at the 40. Done.
ya know, burnsie…i don’t run this blog, but if i had a say…you’d be honored at the 3-putt awards for this comment!! you’d get the golden putter. that was some serious “proof” regarding x’s and o’s and y’s and strange formulas that mr. johnson failed to teach me. this is the heart of applied math, baby, which is beyond me…so i stuck with theoretical math. and delved deeper in useless oblivion.
Q-physics of ballet as a major:)
I didn’t watch this game as closely as I normally would have. I didn’t see the review deliberation on that play.
I was suprised to see the ease the Eagles receivers had, backups or not. It’s an odd thing to see Eagles receivers having big games…
The fact that DeSean has continued to get behind coverages the last two weeks is kind of surprising. The guy goes deep…he doesn’t catch 5 yard outs.
Once again, pencil me in for another 1-4. I’m awesome. Death, Taxes, and a 1-4 or 0-5 in NFL Pick’em for me.
The horrible QB award needs to be named “The Derek Anderson” weekly award for putrid QB play. He has to be having a historically bad NFL season, there can’t be someone who posted a worse season having played this many games. Although, Jamarcus Russell can’t be that far ahead of him?
I am starting to really like what the Eagles have for offensive weapons. Jackson is a playmaker. Maclin seems like he can really play—rookie receivers historically don’t make any impact, but he has made some very good catches. Finally the Eagles have some speed, instead of having 4 guys who run 4.65 and can’t get any separation whatsoever.
Just realized i can be the answer to a question
Derek Anderson:QB Play as Kraft:Football Gambling
Sick.
You just need to stick to betting with me. You’re 3-0 in that world.
Yes Kraft, perhaps you need a Thursday night consultation with CN regarding your picks. He might get you headed in the right direction. He seems to be able to hone in on your winners….
if he doesn’t like the other side, stay away.
Great advice Gross. Kraft – I will guarantee you go undefeated for the rest of the season if you consult with me first. Listen to my input and go the other way. Just to make it interesting, let’s go double or nothing on the remainder of the season. I’ll even bring Leiter in and you’ll have that much more bad advice to ignore.
Nichols, welcome aboard. Not to be egotistical or conceited (both of which i am the poster boy for, straight up incarnation of the words) but;
My concerns with Eli, which i expressed here, also reared their ugly head. What was his biggest issue? High throws. What causes high throws often? Not stepping into your throw. What did we say about plantar facitis of the plant foot? It causes high throws b/c you don’t step into your throws due to the pain. Enjoy what you saw Sunday, b/c it’s gonna keep happening. He’ll be missing g uys high all year, and if it’s into traffic, look out pick six.
Love Shady McCoy, wanted the gmen to get him. He’s an animal. I hope D-Jack gets jacked up and never plays again, a la Matt Wexler getting jacked up my sophomore year on the lacrosse field in new canaan, when he had to be walked off crying b/c he didn’t know where he was. Never played again. Wex, we hardly knew ye.
BK,
Weird high throws. This is why Donovan misses low. Either his guy gets it or no one gets it.
It’s a shame our bet isn’t still on either. Right now Donovan is leading in completion percentage, fewer ints and tied for wins.
He is closing the gap on TDs (9 against Eli’s 13) even though he missed two games.
Yards are pretty much done even though Eli still has a bye upcoming.
The Giants look awful right now, but none of it matters as the NFC is a complete joke.
Long story short, Eli makes me wonder how he won a Super Bowl.
I think McNabb misses low b/c he sucks and missed the open receiver. Let’s stop acting like he aims there. Eli’s missing high, as i said, b/c he can’t step into the throw due to the injury. Look at him pre-injury. Totally different guy. Not to mention he’s had some miscommunication w/ his wr’s, like moss yesterday who STILL should’ve caught that. Only he blows.
He’s only behind now, he was killing McNabb until yesterday. One bad game, which i’m sure another is looming for Don, and he’ll be back ahead.
Gmen look horrible, weak running game and our defense hates getting pressure, loathes it. Osi isn’t the same coming off injury, CC Brown is shockingly bad-like he shouldn’t be in the nFL bad- and our seconday/LB injuries are catching up. Oh well, it happens, get into the postseason and let’s make some noise. Well, at least for the gmen.
I see mcnabb and i wonder how he won a …….oh wait, he threw up, i forgot. My mistake. Maybe eating contests are his thing? Smiling contest?
So was Eli hurt when he airmailed god knows who and Asante picked him off in the playoffs?
Eli has missed high his entire career and it’s why his interception numbers are high.
And yes, Donovan does aim low a lot.
He’s really off target too this year completing 60% of his passes.
A bad game due for Don? Not likely. Bad play calling? That is right around the corner. The Eagles will not lose because of Donovan I guarantee that.
And Eli is playing poorly because of planter faciutius or however you spell it? Really? You wanna play that card?
His cankle hurts? Stop.
Donovan played an entire half on a BROKEN ANKLE and threw 4 touchdowns in that half.
Maybe Eli should just sack up and step into a throw.
BK – don’t you ever begin any sentence, written or spoken, with “not to be egotistical or conceited….” It’s who you are and we love you for it. Don’t do it. Ever.
I don’t but the foot causing the high throws. I’m more inclined to blame the poor pass protection first, then the foot, for his poor performance. He’s still a little boy that gets scared when the big men start crowding him and the O-Line knows it. They need to protect that little guy from the big bad blitz.
I think it’s combination. There were times the protection collapsed, but look at the way he was throwing pre-injury. Even when there is time, he doesn’t step up. Bad news? It’s not healing till the off season. Time to pony up, running game.
