2011 D.A. Football — Week 3.

Blanda Threw 42 Picks in 1962. Of Course, he was 111 Years Old.

Looking for historical DAs can lead you to some interesting places.  Did you know that someone once threw 8 picks in a single game?  This happened so long ago that it’s almost a rumor.  No photos or hard statistical evidence exists.  But, in unearthing that information, I stumbled upon the pick-laden career of Hall of Famer, George Blanda.  Blanda has the 200th best passer rating of all-time, but played back in a prehistoric offensive era and did a hell of job as a kicker as well. It all added up to the 5th most points of all-time, and a spot in Canton despite a heroic 277 career picks.  Only Favre’s been better.

I argue that Blanda did it with more flair than Favre, though.  The upside of playing in the 50s and 60s?  Well, you could throw 42 interceptions in 14 games and keep your job.  Keep firing Georgie Boy!  In a season where he threw at least 4 picks six times, Blanda somehow led Houston to an 11-3 record.  That’s some serious D.A. skill right there.  One of the rare hiccups to that glittering record was a 31-7 throttling at the hands of the Dallas Texans (not a typo).  The Texans were on their way to the AFL Title and exposed the free-slangin’ Blanda for the hot mess he was in 1962.

On October 28th, on the hallowed grounds of Jeppesen Stadium, Blanda attempted only 18 passes.  Four of them found the turf.  Eight of them were caught by his own men, and six of them ended up in the awaiting arms of the Dallas Texans. Amazingly enough, none of the six interceptions was returned for a TD.  But, the final line of 8/18 for 104 yds and 6 INTs has plenty of pop and that’s before you consider the historic Adjusted Yards Per Attempt…(-9.22).  Wow.  How that adds up to a 23.6 Rating I don’t know.  Regardless, an epic game by a future Hall of Famer. Quite D.A.
