Derek Anderson Football — Week 13.

Seven Was a Lucky Number.

It may be a little mean-spirited to pick on Ty Detmer.  After all, the guy was a late draft pick.  Everyone knew he had a glass arm and was the product of the system.  He threw for 5,000 yards!  No one was impressed.  Heisman Trophy! Bleh.  I’m picking Ty because a) he had one hell of a game to select and, b) he’s partially responsible for Koy Detmer. Think about this, is the world ever stuck with Koy Detmer if Ty doesn’t win the Heisman?  Does Koy ever end up in Philadelphia and inexplicably become the darling of a certain group of fans?  Nothing is more frustrating than living in a town where people are calling for Koy Detmer to play quarterback.  Believe me on that one.

So as you can see, I really had no choice but to pick Ty.  Now, what did he do in his career that deserves this acknowledgement?  I suppose you could make the argument that Detmer had a decent career for a 9th round pick.  What’s the expectancy of a player like that?  But, regardless of draft status, Detmer had his share of bad games.  Since we’ve been tracking DA we’ve seen a handful of 5 interception games.  They are awesome, but at the same time, it makes you wonder how amazing it would be if someone threw 6.  Well, old Ty once lit the lamp seven times in one game. Against the Browns!  That’s right, on September 23rd 2001 Detmer was 22-42 with 7 picks.  That’s one off the NFL record.  It would have netted Detmer 61 DA Points.  Oddly, none of the picks was returned for 6, but Detmer’s opposing QB (Tim Couch) did rifle off a pick-6 in the game.

  1. A lot of people said it was Letterman that made it ok for America to laugh again after 9/11. I’d say this performance may have been the real turning point.

  2. Try living in a town that’s rooting for the benching/trading of Phil Simms for Jeff “The Hoss” Hostetler as a starter.
